Malinga’s belly has grown, not his ability! Featured

The Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee had omitted Malinga from the 23 member squad for the Triangular series between Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka in January, based on his poor performance, it is reported.

Malinga who took part in 13 ODI matches during last year had only managed to bag 10 wickets, while the opposition players had managed to score 623 runs for his bowling.

Last year Malinga’s average was 63.20 while his best bowling performance was recorded as 44 for two wickets.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka faced defeat in both batches that were headed by Malinga’s captaincy.

Malinga who led the Sri Lanka squad that faced India last September in an ODI played in Sri Lanka, failed to secure a spot in the ODI series played in UAE against Pakistan in October and the ODI series played in India in December last year.

Malinga retired from Test Cricket in 2010, but continued to participate in the ODI matches.

He faced a spinal problem and was out of the game for a while, but re-joined the team towards the middle of last year in the Champions Trophy.

However, due to his dismal performance, the Cricket Selection Committee had decided to rest him from not only the Indian tour, but also the Twenty20 series to be played in India.

But, despite not being included in the team for the Triangular series under Coach Chandika Hathurusinghe, Malinga was seen practicing with the Sri Lanka team on December 28, when they commenced their training, which he had done voluntarily.

The Sri Lanka Cricket Board meanwhile, had notified all 23 players included in the team named for the Bangladesh tour to refrain from playing first level cricket during the period leading up to the tour, based on the advice of Hathurusinghe.

Meanwhile, Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal who were omitted from the Sri Lanka squad that toured India last November, have been included in the team touring Bangladesh, but it is notable that the team captain has not been named so far.
