According to Sri Lanka Cricket sources, the delay in obtaining approval was due to this last moment selection, sources revealed.
However, there is suspicion that pressure had been exerted in the selection process, but so far parties who were under pressure have not been revealed.
Dayasiri’s actions suspicious!
Last Monday (04), Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara had recalled nine players just before boarding a flight to India to participate in the tournament, claiming that these players had not obtained approval to participate in the tournament.
This action by the minister has raised suspicions in the sports field and speculations are rife that the recall was due to a player known to the minister being excluded from the team.
Ashley to bear losses!
It is also reported that as it was the Chief Executive Officer of Sri Lanka Cricket who had authorised the players’ departure to India. Minister Jayasekara had notified that Ashley should pay the expenses of the air tickets of the nine players who had to turned back.
Chandimal – Asela out, Kusal in!
However, Asela Gunaratne and Kusal Janith Perera who were excluded from the test team due to lack of fitness standards, have been included in the ODI squad.
But, Test captain Dinesh Chandimal has been excluded from the IDO team.
