Sri Lanka dropped 56 catches! Featured

Sri Lanka dropped as many as 56 catches offered by rival batsmen in all formats of cricket in the past one year.

Weak fielding has attributed to Sri Lanka losing many matches and being relegated to eighth position in one-day and seventh in Test rankings.

From being the best fielding team in Asia a decade ago, this situation of decline is said to be due to changes in coaches within short periods as well as weak administration of the game.

In the past seven years, the team has had 10 head coaches, with Nick Pothas, who joined as the fielding coach, presently being the head coach.

Two years ago, Sri Lanka obtained the services of the best fielder Jonty Rhodes.

Graham Ford, who was to be head coach until the 2019 World Cup, left the position even without informing Sri Lanka Cricket, with media reporting he had serious clashes with the administration.

The latest case in point in the fielding setback was the 304-run loss to India in the Galle Test.

Asela Gunaratne not only dropped opener Shikar Dhawan at 31, allowing him to go on to make 190, but also he badly injured his thumb to lose the entire series against India.

Dimuth Karunaratne too, dropped debutante Hrdick Pandya when on 04, and he made run-a-ball half century.

Given below is the list of the 56 catches dropped by Sri Lanka:
