Nimali sets record straight

Speaking on the comments made by Sports Minister Namala Rajapaksa in parliament recently, Nimali Liyanaarachchi stated that she never left her running shoes behind.

“All I tried to do was purchase a pair of better shoes from Japan, and since we had to adhere to Covid-19 regulations at the Olympic Village, I was not allowed to go out. So I made a request to an official of the National Olympic Committee who was there and said I will pay for the shoes if they could facilitate the purchase,” she stated, adding that “I ran for the 800m Olympics heats with my shoes but unfortunately couldn’t qualify.”

31 year old Nimali, an Asian Games and SAARC Games gold medalist, qualified for the Tokyo Olympics on a wild card selection. She was the only Sri Lankan athlete to win a gold medal at the Asian Athletics Games in 2017. She last won a medal for Sri Lanka in 2019 at the Military World Games in the 800m, scoring a silver medal and was a member of the silver medal winning 400x4 women’s relay team as well.
