Athapaththu became the first Sri Lankan player to be signed by a WBBL franchise when she was brought in by the Melbourne Renegades in 2017. She has had several memorable international performances against Australia in the last few years, including an unbeaten 178 in Bristol in the World Cup in 2017 and a rapid hundred - 113 off 66 balls in a T20I - at North Sydney Oval in 2019.
Athapaththu's last match in the WBBL was in 2019 having not participated in the 2020 season.
Speaking about the addition, the Scorchers' head coach Shelley Nitschke has said," Chamari Athapaththu is an undeniable match-winner and has the ability to take the game away from the opposition quickly."
The Scorchers finished fourth in the WBBL standings last season with six wins and six losses before they were beaten in the semi-final by the Melbourne Stars in Sydney.
