Kabaddi player who faced doping scandal, acquitted

A special appeal committee yesterday (11) decided to acquit and release a female Kabaddi player who faced a doping scandal, citing flaws in the probe.

Sajini Manori Jayasinghe, who was facing a 04-year ban, was acquitted and released in this manner.

She became the best female Kabaddi player at the 44th National Sports Festival held at Anuradhapura in 2018. Her team, which represented the Sabaragamuwa Kabaddi team, won the gold medal.

However, a random urine sample found traces of prohibited steroids and so did a second sample. Accordingly she faced a 04-year ban from the sport from 2018 Oct. 12 which would have run upto 2022 October.

However, she had said during the investigation that she suspected a special tea she had unwittingly consumed to be the reason.
