Mr. Sumathipala had expressed his support during a luncheon he had hosted yesterday (06) for operation officers of cricket clubs.
He has also stated that Mohan Silva and Ravin Wickramaratne too, should be supported despite previous reports citing that that he was ready to nominate others to replace Mohan and Ravin at the election.
However, it is reported that Sumathipala has not said anything about Jayantha Dharmadasa.
'Sri Lanka Mirror’ learns that although Mr. Sumathipala was expecting around 40 persons, only around 29 were present. Out of cricket clubs that are eligible to vote, only 14 had attended the luncheon. However, there had been only a few who are capable of influencing the vote.
Several persons representing cricket associations of Western province, Chilaw and Matara were also present. They are Anura Weerasinghe and his associate - Nimal from of the Western province, as well as Chinthaka of Chilaw and Galappaththi of Matara.
Shammi silva is also the current president of the Western Provincial Association.
However, it is singular that Sumith Perera, who is said to be a lifelong adversary of Mr. Sumthipala was present. Mr. Perera is the president for lifeof Baduraliya Cricket Club.
A.R.M. Aroos (Moors), Sudharman de Silva (Bloomfield) and Shammi Gunasekera (Nugegoda Sports Club), Sujeewa Godaliyadda, Bandula Dissanayake, Krishantha Kapukotuwa, Gihan Weerasinghe and Deepal Madurapperuma had also been present at the luncheon.
Although he had initially stated that Mohan and Ravin should be backed at the elections, after a few round of drinks, Mr. Sumathipala had started to deeply criticize them, reports say.
Speaking to ’Sri Lanka Mirror’, several participants had said that our initial revelation on the event, seemed to have changed the nature of the discussion at the luncheon.
We also learn that Mr. Priyantha Zoysa, who had been tasked with ensuring the attendance of the guests, had been rebuked by Mr. Sumathipala for failing to do so.
