Raina arrested & bailed for flouting Covid-19 rules

World Cup-winning former India cricketer Suresh Raina has explained his stance in a statement after he was arrested, booked and later released on bail for attending a party at a Mumbai club which was found in violation of Covid-19 protocols in the state on Monday.

Suresh Raina had been in Mumbai for a shoot which extended to late hours following which he was invited to a dinner at the club by a friend, according to a statement. Raina was at a club near the Mumbai airport which was raided by the police, who took 34 people into custody including 7 staff members.

"Suresh was in Mumbai for a shoot which extended to late hours and was invited by a friend for a quick dinner post the same prior to him taking his flight back to Delhi. He was not aware of the local timings and protocols," Raina's statement read.

"Once pointed out, he immediately complied with the procedures laid out by the authorities and regrets the unfortunate and unintentional incident. He always holds rules and laws laid down by governing bodies with the highest regard and will continue to do so in the future as well."

According to Indian media, a total of 34 people including Raina, singer Guru Randhawa and Bollywood celebrity Sussanne Khan were arrested, including seven staffers of the club.
