Among the many methods that are being used, stilt fishing is an unique and iconic sight in the Southern area of Weligama.
The fishermen sit on a cross bar tied to a vertical pole and driven into the sand a few meters offshore. From this high position, the fishermen cast their lines, and wait until a fish comes along to be caught.
The practice is still being followed by the younger generations, with most of them compelled to do so to supplement their families’ slim income.
However, the fishermen complain that pollution, noisy tourists drive their catch away.
