Islandwide bus strike commences

Public transport has been largely hampered due to the islandwide private bus strike which commenced by several private bus collectives from today (02).

However, SLTB buses and certain private buses are plying on the roads as usual.

The bus associations say that they will continue to strike until they receive an acceptable solution. Certain Trishaw associations too, are to join the strike.

Meanwhile, the The Lanka Private Bus Owners' Association president Gemunu Wijeratne said yesterday (01) that they would not support the countrywide bus strike, as President Maithripala Sirisena had assured them that he would take action to withdraw the Rs.25,000 fine for speeding and overtaking on the left.

School Van collectives, too, have decided not to join the strike.
