President, Prime Minister Advice Police to act against extremists

President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe have instructed police to take immediate action against anyone attempting to ignite racial or religious tension, irrespective of their cast, creed, religion or social standing.

The two leaders have emphasized that action should be taken regardless of whether they are from the North or South, but on the basis that all are equal citizens of this country and the law is common to all.

Just as the 38 ‘Aava’ clan members of the North were taken into custody, any extremist be it Sinhalese or Muslims in the South, all would be arrested for igniting racial and religious tension, said the police.

The arrest of a Sinhalese and an activist of a Muslim organization was due to their involvement in spreading racial and religious tension, according to the law enforcement units.
