A woman had been arrested in Jaffna over a brutal assault of an infant.

A video showing the woman mercilessly caning a 09-month old, was widely circulated across social media.

The 24-year old suspect is said to be the child's mother and it was disclosed that the woman had  returned a few months ago from Kuwait with the infant.

The incident had taken place in Ariyalai, Jaffna and the infant taken under police custody, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.
