Court acquits journalists

Three journalists who were sued for investigating a corruption scandal in Deniyaya have been acquitted by the Morawaka Magistrate Court in Kotapola today (08).
The three journalists, namely Daya Neththasinghe, Shalika Wimalasena and Ravindra Pushpakumara were arrested on Sep. 02, 2009 when they were bringing in details and evidence of a house being built by Thusitha Ranawaka, using resources of the ‘Maga Neguma’ initiative. Mr. Ranawaka is a relative of former President - Mahinda Rajapakasa.
At that time, the three journalists were working for the ‘Lanka’ newspaper.
Following their arrest, the journalists were detained and questioned at the TID for seven days on charges of attempting to assasinate the then President.
Afterwards, a case was filed against them at the Morawaka courts on charges of trespassing on private property.
The case continued for seven years before the Morawaka Magistrate Court today ruled that the charges against the journalists could not be proved.
