Proposal to reorganize Medical Council Featured

Health minister Rajitha Senaratne says he plans to discuss with the stakeholders a reorganizing of the Sri Lanka Medical Council to make it an advanced one like the British Medical Council.

Ravaya quotes him as saying that he will soon present a proposal in that regard to parliament.

According to him, a Medical Council is not one exclusively of the doctors, but one of the people as well.

He refutes claims of plans to dissolve the SLMC, but says the inclusion of knowledgeable intellectuals and people’s representatives will ensure a more independent service from it.

Wrongdoers are its members

He says persons found guilty of wrongdoing are today members of the SLMC.

According to Senaratne, associations of doctors and specialist doctors have issued a statement calling for a reorganizing of the SLMC, and to protest against that not taking place any sooner, Prof. Colvin Gunaratne had resigned as its chairman.

Government nurses association president Muruttettuwe Ananda Thera says the SLMC should continue as it is after rectifying any shortcomings.

Meanwhile, spokesman of the association of parents of government medical faculty students Wasantha Alwis says they oppose any changes to the SLMC.

He alleges the attempt at reorganizing is aimed at recruiting students without even three simple passes to study medicine and to grant jobs for Advanced Level dropouts.
