Chinese company gave Rs. 1.9 m to Pushpa Rajapaksa foundation Featured

China’s CICT company that was in charge of the construction of Colombo south port terminal had deposited Rs. 19.41 million to a foundation run by Pushpa Rajapaksa, wife of ex-minister Basil Rajapaksa, according to Dinamina.

However, that money was given not as a donation, and a state audit under POS/A/SLPA/2016/4 on 01 March 2016 had inquired about this being mentioned as port development expenditure.

CICT launched the work on 13 July 2013, for which payments are repayable in 35 years.

The payment to the foundation was credited on 21 May 2012 by cheque no. 594691 of Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank to account no. 204-1-001-0003290 of the People’s Bank head office.

Both the finance director of the Ports Authority and the CEO of CICT have confirmed the payment as a port construction cost.

The audit has inquired to why such a huge sum had been credited to this organization.

After the lapse of the said 35 years, this amount will be included in the total payment due from the Ports Authority to CICT.
