MP Dissanayake, speaking to the media after the submission of the 20A as a Private Member’s Bill along with MPs Sunil Handunnetti, Nihal Galappatti and Dr Nalinda Jayatissa, said President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe must make known to the public their positions on the abolition of Executive Presidency.
He pointed out if the Government has a genuine interest in delivering its pre-election pledge of abolishing the Executive Presidency, it can present the Bill in Parliament and pass it within a period of 2-3 months. “It can be procrastinated if the Government has no interested. We are ready for a broad discussion with all political parties and accommodate amendments as necessary. We are open for constructive criticism,” he added.
A pledge was given to the people!
“The Executive Presidency will be abolished” – President promises at Ven. Sobhitha Thera’s funeral
Anura Kumara Dissanayake pointed out that President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had openly pledged to abolish the Executive Presidency and now it’s time to implement it practically.
He noted that as former President Mahinda Rajapaksa too had pledged to abolish the Executive Presidency, he cannot oppose this move either.
The JVP leader said that they intended to discuss the issue with President Sirisena, Prime Minister Wickremesinghe, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan and other political leaders in the future.
He further pointed out that it was hopeless to discuss the 20th Amendment with those who are glued to their ‘hero worship’ of the Executive Presidency.
