20th amendment's formulation nears completion Featured

JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake says the formulation of the 20th amendment to the constitution to abolish the executive presidency is at its final stage.

Once that task is complete, an extensive dialogue will be launched with religious leaders, political parties and civil society organizations, he says.

According to him, there are various misconceptions with regard to the proposed amendment.

Dissanayake says the views both in support and against the amendment will be taken into consideration.

Meanwhile, joint opposition MP Kumar Welgama says executive powers should be removed from the presidency.

Giving an interview to a weekend newspaper, he said the position should be given the required, not the executive, powers only.

However, the Mahanayake Theras of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters say the executive presidency should continue.
