An official for the Colombo municipal council said some of these companies obtained permission to hang 50 banners, but ended up hanging as many as 500 banners in the municipality area.
Furthermore, expenses for the removal of these banners have to be borne by the respective municipal and urban councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas.
When contacted, a top advertising officer of a leading property developer said it was practically difficult for them to obtain permission for these banners.
Meanwhile, the local government ministry has received a complaint that a property developer has hung banners on every 10th electricity post on the road from Colombo to Badulla during the New Year season.
No payment has been made for these banners.
