UNP to takeover SLFP's social empowerment ministry Featured

According to an agreement reached between the president and the prime minister, the SLFP and the UNP are to exchange some of the subjects previously allotted to each party at the upcoming cabinet reshuffle.

Speaking, deputy minister Ajith P. Perera said that the UNP has requested for the ministry of social empowerment, adding that it would provide the strength and zest to redirect the country towards a new journey.

Internal sources say that the subjects falling under the ministries of social empowerment and Labour, which were initially under the SLFP, would be handed over to the UNP. In return, the ministries of higher education and state enterprise, which were initially under the UNP, would be taken over by the SLFP, sources add.

Four ministers were temporarily sworn in to fill 06 recently vacated ministerial posts and Malik Samarawickrema had taken oaths as the minister of Social Empowerment and Welfare, Labor and Labor Relations, under this agreement.

A full cabinet reshuffle is expected to take place after the Sinhala and Hindu New Year.
