Permission for housing complex at Muthurajawela! Featured

The Agrarian Services Department has given permission to Melwatte Property Development Pvt. Ltd. to build a housing complex in a 406-acre plot of the very important wetland Muthurajawela, alleges the Environment Conservation Trust.

Director of the Trust Sajeewa Chamikara says in a statement that the department’s Gampaha district assistant commissioner M.L.N. Sandamali has intervened to obtain the agrarian commissioner’s permission for the project.

The property development company, owned by Ajith Panditaratne, has paid Rs. 32,551,000 to reclaim 65,102 perches of abandoned paddy land spread in the Thuduwa-Bopitiya (165 A) and Kujanwatte (166A) Grama Seva division areas, Chamikara claims.

Muthurajawela is the country’s biggest marshland and comprises wet and marshy land and mangroves.

Spreading from Kelani River to the Negombo lagoon, it has several scattered urban and industrial areas as well.
