Woman with fake certificate enrolled as ministry secretary? Featured

Industries and commerce minister Risath Bathiudeen’s secretary T.M.K.B. Tennakoon has enrolled a woman, who has voluntarily retired following a fraud charge, as a secretary of the ministry, reports say.

She has been accused of producing a fake GCE advanced level certificate to obtain a senior manager position at the marketing division of Salusala.

When contacted, Tennakoon denied reports that she was employed by the ministry.

Sri Lanka Mirror also asked him about his alleged involvement in getting her cleared of the fake certificate charge.

According to Tennakoon, she had joined the institution around 20 years ago, and at the time the qualification was the GCE ordinary level certificate only.

She had been given a promotion based on her period of service, he said.

When cabinet approved a voluntary retirement scheme, she was among 198 Salusala employees who volunteered to retire, but certain heads of the institution tried to prevent her, as an act of revenge.

Her matter was referred to a committee, which absolved her and she retired with compensation.

Reports reaching Sri Lanka Mirror say she received Rs. 2.8 million as compensation.

The fraud investigation bureau had received a complaint from Salusala over her getting a top position by furnishing a fake education certificate.

When contacted, its chairman confirmed the complaint, but declined to give details.

Police sources say Salusala later withdrew the complaint after a ministry secretary intervened.
