Youth cricket team to play sans a sponsor!

Sri Lanka will face Ireland tomorrow (14) in their first encounter of the12th Under-19 World Cup organised by the International Cricket Council in New Zealand.

Sri Lanka are in Group D, which runs from January 13 to February 3. They are grouped alongside Pakistan, Ireland and Afghanistan.

The Sri Lankans will face Afghanistan in their second game on Wednesday and face Pakistan next Friday.

The Sri Lanka under-19 team captained by Kamidu Mendis lost the practice match played earlier.

Issues over Kamidu’s captaincy!

Meanwhile, there have been issues with regard to the removal of the previous captain and appointing of Kamidu, according to cricket inside sources.

Some of the officials are facing allegations of having treated some players unfairly.

This year’s youth world cup will comprise 12 teams representing countries that have gained test status and 4 countries that have not gained test status totalling 16 teams.

The entire series comprises of 48 matches that will be played at seven different venues.

The first round matches will comprise of four groups of four counties each, while the two best teams from each group will qualify for the super eight round.

 No Sponsor

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Cricket marketing division had failed to secure a sponsor for the Sri Lanka team and they went to New Zealand without a sponsor.

However, all the other teams competing in the Under-19 World Cup Tournament have obtained sponsors. The Sri Lankan team though, has no sponsor despite the fact that a bunch of officials at Sri Lanka Cricket marketing division are being paid hundreds of thousands in wages to find sponsorship for the teams.
