Rajitha discourages use of arecanut, lime Featured

Minister Rajitha Senaratne proposes a ban on the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products within a 500 metre area of a school.

Already, there is a ban on the sale of liquor in the vicinity of schools, he notes, adding that strong action will also be taken against the sale of arecanut and lime, used for betel chewing.

Arecanut and lime are part of Sri Lanka’s culture, but using them to chew betel causes oral cancer, he says.

It has been found that arecanut contains four chemicals that cause cancer in the mouth, windpipe and in the stomach.

Due to the harmful effects of tobacco and lime, many are replacing them with herbal alternatives such as cloves, cardamom, nugmeg etc.
