Court case filed against Sajin Vaas over Mihin Lanka fraud Featured

The Bribery Commission has filed a case in the Colombo magistrate’s court against Sajin Vaas Gunawardena, former chief executive officer of Mihin Lanka airlines.

Also an ex-MP, he is accused of having acted to give a Rs. 883 million undue profit for a Singaporean company.

According to a COPE report to parliament, Mihin Lanka suffered a Rs. 3.3 billion loss in 2013.

President Maithripala Sirisena said yesterday (24) that he would appoint a commission to probe fraud and corruption at Mihin Lanka and SriLankan airlines.

No action taken

However, the government is under criticism for not having taken steps against the fraud and corruption that had taken place during the Rajapaksa regime.

Cabinet spokesman Rajitha Senaratne told the media recently that he was unaware as to why no action was not being taken against those responsible for fraud at institutions like SriLankan.

A committee headed by lawyer J.C. Weliamuna probed the matter and handed over a report to prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in April 2015, but none of its recommendations have been implemented.

The report recommended punishment for the head of the institution at the time, who was Nishantha Wickremasinghe, brother of Shiranthi Rajapaksa.

Meanwhile, minister Kabir Hashim told journalists early this year that he was sorry that he could not take action against ‘a mafia’ was still very much alive at the SriLankan.

Thereafter, the president summoned its directors and questioned them.

Allegations continue

Under the present regime too, allegations continue to be leveled against the airline.

Sri Lanka Mirror broke the news that its director board has tendered their resignations.

Minister Hashim could not be contacted for details, as he was overseas.
