Prices of 48 medicines raised again! Featured

The prices of 48 varieties of essential medicine have now been raised again after the government reduced the prices last year, says the National Movement for the Protection of Consumer Rights.

Its president Ranjith Withanage says in a statement that the reductions were announced in gazette extraordinary no. 1989/61 dated 21 October 2016.

However, the prices have been increased through gazette extraordinary no. 2049/31 of 14 December 2017.

The statement notes that certain companies producing quality medicines left the market following the price reductions.

There was talk that companies friendly with the health ministry grabbed the opportunity and raised their prices for low-quality medicines.

The Movement questions the government as to who would pay for the wide media publicity given to the price reductions at the cost of a big sum of money.
