New Constitution proposals – referendum!

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told Constitutional Council members during a meeting yesterday that he would get the initial draft of the new constitution passed in parliament with a 2/3 majority.

He made this comment when the Constitutional Council formulating proposals for the new constitution met in parliament yesterday.

The PM said this approving the statement made by the Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan that in addition to the proposal being approved in parliament it should be approved by a referendum.

Wickremesinghe presented the six subcommittee reports given to the Operations Committee with regard to drawing up a new constitution.
