Cabinet subcommittee to study limited glyphosate use Featured

A four-member cabinet subcommittee has been appointed to study a cabinet paper that seeks permission for a limited use of glyphosate in the plantation sector.

Navin Dissanayake submitted the cabint paper yesterday (18), and together with Rajitha Senaratne, Susil Premajayantha, Duminda Dissanayake, he will look into the matter.

The cabinet paper was submitted on the basis of a report by a committee appointed to make recommendations with regard to the pesticide and insecticide policy to the the ministerial committee on economic management.

However, the media has reported the economic management committee has not approved recommendations of this ministerial committee, which was to have 10 members, but the report mentions the names of only nine members.

The report does not contain recommendations by committee member Prof. Priyantha Yapa of Sabagaramuwa University.

When contacted, he told Sri Lanka Mirror that there were harmless and effective pest control methods other than the glyphosate use.
