In an interview with today’s ‘Lankadeepa’, Karunanayake says he is today recognized for having stood firm in the face of intimidation by the IMF and the World Bank.
He says he can give documentary evidence to show that certain ministers had credited money due for temples to their personal accounts.
‘Backbenchers are dejected’
When asked if his answers indicated internal trouble in the government, Karunanayake said the backbenchers were still dejected after being in the opposition for more than 20 years.
He said opposition came when steps were taken to eliminate corruption.
The ex-finance minister said he had remained silent for a reason, and added that those who had raised the biggest voices were those who committed the most wrongdoing.
‘If others’ sins could be washed off my head’
He went onto say that he would be happy if others’ sins could be washed off his head, but noted that changing pillows would not cure cancer.
Asked as to why Asia’s best finance minister was not good enough for Sri Lanka, Karunanayake said those who level accusations against him should answer that.
He also said he would soon expose a minister who was so powerful to maneuver even the president and the prime minister.
He said his strength was his parliamentary group, the cabinet majority and the people.
Karunanayake also alleged a person who runs websites, regularly changes sides and is a character like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, too, was behind his loss of the finance ministry.
