Bolgoda Lake at risk due to Karadiyana garbage boom Featured

The daily volume of garbage being dumped at the Karadiyana garbage terminal in Piliyandala has increased to 871 metric tonnes, reports say.

Garbage dumped at the terminal also includes untreated waste from factories and hospitals such as raw chemicals and disposed instruments.

Under this backdrop, the nearby Bolgoda Lake faces a risk of being further polluted.

The dumping of garbage at the terminal increased after a court order allowed the CMC to dump 350 MT of garbage into the terminal daily.

Earlier, 541 MT of garbage from areas falling under 07 Local Government institutions were dumped into the Karadiyana Terminal every day.

According to a report submitted to the Committee on Public Accounts, the Dehiwala - Mt. Lavinia Municipal Council dumps 215 MT of garbage to the Karadiyana Terminal every day.

In addition, it is learnt a large daily volume of garbage is dumped at the site as follows :

Homagama - 35MT
Maharagama - 80MT
Kesbewa - 60MT
Moratuwa - 55MT
Kotte - 50MT
Borelesgamuwa - 26MT
