Private company permitted to import unregistered cancer drug

The Ministry of Health has given permission to a private company to import a drug required for cancer without registering it, the Sunday Times reported.

It is said that this permission has been granted as no supplier has come forward to import the drug.

Accordingly, the National Drug Regulatory Authority has granted exemption from registration to the relevant company for these drugs.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Health said that due to the urgent need to import these drugs, the normal procedure of testing the samples and testing for side effects would not be followed and the importer would be responsible for the drug.

This drug is approved for use only in government hospitals.

The maximum retail price of a vial has been set at Rs. 90,250.
