SL has 5th worst pollution due to plastic, polythene Featured

Sri Lanka is placed fifth in a list of countries which is experiencing worst environment pollution conditions due to plastic and polythene.

Marine Environment Protection Authority’s Dr. Terney Pradeepa Kumara says Sri Lankans dump one billion pounds of plastic and polythene a year.

Four million polythene bags alone are discarded a day, he notes.

Oil spills cause 10 per cent of pollution of the sea, while the other 90 pc are attributable to the garbage disposed.

Ninety pc of pollution near fisheries harbours are due to polythene, lunch-sheets and plastics, he adds.
