A ‘bud’ vehicle game : Imports & Exports Controller in hot water? Featured

Reports state that the Imports and Exports Controller has opposed the move of 4 vehicle import companies to import vehicles stating they are model vehicles to assist in re-engineering activities for local vehicle production and assembling.

It is also reported that State Minister for Motor Car Industry Dilum Amunugama has been pressuring his ministry officials to speak with the Ministry of Finance regarding the matter.

Experts in the motor car industry state that it is a joke that model vehicles are being imported when Sri Lanka does not even have a motor vehicle plant necessary to manufacture vehicles.

The vehicles were to be imported by four companies including Micro Motor Company, United Motors and Mizuki Motors.

Speaking to Aruna newspaper, State Minister Dilum Amunugama said that not receiving approval for the import of at least one vehicle per company is surprising. He added that a solution would be arrived at following discussions with Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa and Ministry Secretary S.R. Attygalle.

He stated that local assembling of vehicles or manufacturing them is a solution for the rising demand in vehicles.

The Aruna newspaper further reports that Imports and Exports Controller Damayanthi Karunarathne has stated that she is unaware of such a request.
