Speaking to media in Anuradhapura today, Minister Prof. GL Peiris said the country’s COVID-19 situation is being assessed weekly, adding that talks are being held continuously over the resumption of schools, preschools, piriven, universities and tuition classes.
However, a definitive time period cannot be mentioned as to when these institutions will reopen, he added.
Meanwhile the Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) has accused Minister of Education Prof. GL Peiris of reaching arbitrary decisions pertaining to reopening schools and other academic institutions.
Chief Secretary of the Union Joseph Stalin requested the Education Minister to refrain from endangering the lives of 43,000 children.
He claimed the views and suggestions of all factions including parents, teachers and principals, must be sought before reaching a final decision.
