Refurbished "Floating Market" to opens today

The refurbished "Floating Market" in Colombo Pettah will be opened to the public this afternoon(07).

The government has spent Rs 35 million to refurbish the shopping complex and the surrounding environment, said a statement from the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing.

The market was firstly declared open in August 2014, under the supervision of the then Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

A sum of Rs 312 million and army troops were deployed to construct it.But during the previous Yahapalana government, less attention was paid to maintaining the place and it was left to be abandoned, said the statement.

It said out of 103 shops at the complex, 80 percent were closed down during the previous government.
