DIG Jasingharachchi declines legal division's services Featured

Sri Lanka's first female DIG - Bimshani Jasingharachchi has formally notified the IGP that she will not require services of the police legal division during the FR petition filed before the Supreme Court, with regard to her promotion.

A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court will consider the FR petition filed at the court seeking the annulment of the appointment of Sri Lanka’s first female DIG.

The petitioners claim DIG Jasingharachchi’s appointment is contrary to the recruitment process for senior Police officers. They further state a woman cannot hold the post of DIG in Sri Lanka, as the regulations pertaining to the appointment of women to the post of DIG do not provide for the use of the word ‘women’.

32 SSPs have filed this petition.

In her letter, DIG Jasingharachchi has pointed out that since the director of the police legal division, DIG Ruwan Gunasekara too, is among the petitioners, trust cannot be placed in the services of the legal division.
