Brandix to donate US$50m for Covid-19 vaccines

Several top officials of Brandix, including CEO Ashraff Omar have decided to donate US$50 million (Rs. 6250 million) to the government to purchase Covid-19 vaccines.

The second wave of Covid-19 was initially reported from the Brandix Factory in Minuwangoda.

Mr. Omar has informed the Senior Advisor to the President of the Government Vaccination Committee - Lalith Weeratunga, that they can provide the donation to the government  at any given time and that the money should be used to vaccinate working people of the country, the 'Deshaya' newspaper reports.

The $50 million donation amounts to a quarter of the $200 million vaccination program in Sri Lanka.

Mr. Weeratunga has told the 'Deshaya' that he hopes to use his assistance to purchase vaccines and it would largely boost the government's vaccination program.

The Brandix company is facing allegations of being responsible for the beginning of Covid-19 second wave and the investigation on the wave's origin is still pending.
