Conflicts within Sajith's party: Shiral, Keerthi, Salley and Maithri neglected Featured

The authorities of Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) led by Sajith Premadasa have decided not to appoint  former Senior Presidential Adviser Shiral Lakthilaka and former Governors Keerthi Tennakoon and Azath Salley to any position in the party, reports say.

It is further reported that such a decision has been taken as Azath Salley, who represented the party in the national list at the last general election, has repeatedly insulted the party leader as he was not offered a national list seat, and Attorney-at -law Shiral Lakthilaka and Keerthi Tennakoon have sought to highlight a second leadership within the party and form factions.

Shiral Lakthilaka, who led a political uprising to remove Ranil Wickremesinghe from the United National Party (UNP) leadership and appoint Sajith Premadasa, is considered to have played a major role in building SJB.

Rajitha Keerthi Tennakoon is also said to have played a major role in the formation of the SJB as its head of the media wing during and after the last general election.

However, it has been decided not to bestow any party responsibility of SJB upon them, citing information received that they are at the forefront of forming a new political movement and have launched a campaign to field its leader as the common opposition candidate in the 2024 presidential election.

It is further reported that it has been decided not to include Shiral Lakthilaka in the committee appointed to formulate the constitution of SJB.

Maithri too neglected

Meanwhile, it is reported that President's Counsel Maithri Gunaratne, a former governor who was a leader of SJB has also been neglected.

Gunaratne , who contested the last general election as the Badulla District Organizer of SJB, had not been invited to the meeting held in Badulla last Saturday under the chairmanship of Sajith Premadasa and the meeting held at a hotel in Badulla to approve the party constitution.
The march organized by him and Shiral Lakthilaka from Matara to Colombo to elect Sajith Premadasa as the leader of the UNP was attacked in Matara and it has gone down in political history as the 'Battle of Cinnamon'.
