91% of COVID-19 deaths from Western Province - GMOA

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) says the Western Province remains a coronavirus hotspot and urges authorities to closely monitor the situation.

Editor of the GMOA Dr. Haritha Aluthge said 91% of the country’s COVID-19 deaths have been reported from the Western Province and emphasised the need to take prompt action to control the situation.

He said stringent decisions are necessary to bring the situation under control in the Western Province.

Dr. Aluthge noted out of the 109 COVID-19 fatalities reported in the country, 74% of the deaths were confirmed from the Colombo district, 12% from the Gampaha district while 5% of the deaths were recorded from the Kalutara district.

He added only nine COVID-19 related deaths were confirmed from other 22 administrative districts.

Dr. Haritha Aluthge also noted that the majority of the COVID-19 related deaths have been confirmed from the Colombo Municipal Council limits which should concern the authorities.

Dr. Aluthge stressed that authorities should take prompt decision to prevent the further spread of the novel coronavirus.
