New electoral system will wipe out democracy – Dullas Featured

The joint opposition accepts the argument that the proposed electoral system for local government elections will wipe out smaller parties, says JO MP Dullas Alahapperuma.

Responding to a question raised by a journalist at a media briefing in Colombo yesterday (22), Alahapperuma also admitted that his government was to be blamed for that wrong.

That wrong should be corrected, he said, adding that what would get destroyed due to this was not smaller parties, but democracy itself.

Pointing to the practice of not counting the votes received by a party if that does not exceed five per cent, he said that that percentage was too big for the JVP as well as other parties that are not in the mainstream politics.

Alahapperuma warned that this would lead to a resurgence of guerilla warfare.

A simple majority passage by parliament to reduce that percentage to two or three per cent will be the solution, according to him.

Accusing the government of giving various reasons to put off the LG polls, the MP said the JO was ready to face the election under the old electoral system.
