444 inmates get presidential pardon Featured

A total of 444 inmates held at 29 prisons across the country have been released on a special Presidential pardon.

The Department of Prisons said President Gotabaya Rajapaksa granted the pardon to minimize congestion in prisons and in view of today’s Binara Poya.

The group includes 18 women.

Those released had been issued prison sentences on minor offences and over the failure to pay fines.

The Prisons Department said no individuals who were issued sentences on murder, rape and other serious criminal charges have been pardoned.
