Politician to be arrested over Anawilundawa issue Featured

Police say investigations have been launched to arrest a politician who had aided and abetted the illegal deforestation of an area in Kadolana, in the Anawilundawa reserve in Puttalam.

Speaking to NewsRadio a high ranking officer of the Arachchikattuwa Police said the wanted suspect is a local politician of the Puttalam District.

It was revealed on the 26th of August that an area within the Anawilundawa reserve in Puttalam that has been declared a Ramsar convention wetland, was illegally cleared for prawn farming.

A businessman in the prawn industry and the owner of the backhoe used to illegally clear the land was arrested over the incident and remanded till Friday.

Information pertaining to a local politician involved in the incident was revealed during interrogation of the duo.

Meanwhile a committee chaired by Secretary to the Ministry of Wildlife and Forest Conservation Bandula Harischandra was appointed to conduct prompt investigations into the incident.

Subject Minister CB Rathnayake on Saturday ordered the committee to submit the relevant report within a week.
