One arrested over Anavilundawa destruction

A suspect has been arrested over the clearance of mangroves at the Anawilundawa Sanctuary in Chilaw, reports say.

Earlier today, Mr. Bandula Harischandra, secretary to the ministry of Wildlife and Forest Conservation, says minister - C.B. Ratnayake has ordered action with regard to the destruction of the Anavilundawa Sanctuary.

The media release notes that the illegal activity had taken place in an area of 0.697 hectares.

In a media release, he adds that wildlife officials have reported the matter to the Magistrate’s Court Chilaw as the initial step. Further investigations are underway with the police to disclose the suspects and the case items.

Meanwhile, taking up the matter in parliament yesterday (27), minister Wimal Weerawansa stated that the present government was not given 2/3 power in parliament to destroy the environment.
