5 remanded over abusing minor on fishing vessel

Five suspects were arrested over assaulting and abusing a 16-year-old employed on board a multi day fishing vessel have been remanded until the 27th of August.

The order was issued by the Matara Acting Magistrate.

The suspects, including the owner of the vessel, were arrested by the Matara Kotawila Police yesterday morning.

The boy who had returned home on August 12 with injuries all over his body, had told his parents that he was tortured for having accidentally dropped a fish caught in the net back into the sea.

The minor is currently receiving treatment at the Matara General Hospital.

Further investigations are underway.

Meanwhile, addressing the media, State Minister of Women and Child Development Piyal Nishantha De Silva has said that it was revealed the minor was employed using forged documents.
