On the day of Kavinda Isuru’s death, officials claimed the detainee had fallen off the 20 feet high prison wall, while trying to escape.
Noting that they cannot accept the fact their son had died while attempting to escape, they allege that their son's body bore clear signs of assault.
They had lodged a complaint on this regard on June 02.
Speaking, the victim's mother has said, "When we went to see him in the morning there was a huge bleeding wound at the back of his head. Both legs were broken. His hand had a fracture. The hand was broken. There was also a lot of blood under the trolley. His clothes and hair were wet. We think he was ducked in water... We were not told how he died. We were told that the post mortem report will be given on June 19. The temporary certificate issued to bury our son claimed that he had fallen off a wall. We have doubts about this death.”
Meanwhile, Senaka Perera, president of the Committee for Protecting Rights of Prisoners (CPRP) said that although media reports claimed the victim had died while trying to escape, the victim had not had any food for two days until he died.
How a person who had been starving for two days could scale a wall in this manner, is questionable, he added.
He also said that there was another inmate who had witnessed that the victim was beaten to death.
Noting that this eyewitness had been transferred to the Polonnaruwa Prison, the CPRP president said that although he had gone to the Polonnaruwa prison to obtain an affidavit, he wasn't allowed to do so by Prison officials.
Noting that the victim had been tortured to death, the CPRP president added that the parents intend to file a FR petition before the Supreme Court as well.
