Gemunu stresses need for alternate payment system Featured

If the transport minister's decision to limit passengers to the number of seats was implemented as a law, the entire bus industry would collapse, says President of the Lanka Private Bus Owners' Association Gemunu Wijeratne says.

Wijeratne said that although he agreed to the decision as a concept, an alternative payment system needed to be introduced as well.

Private bus owners say that there are several practical issues they face that needs to be addressed.

Will implement it as a law

Minister Amaraweera had said that the decision to limit the number of passengers to the number of seats would be implemented as a law in the future.

Minister Amaraweera had pressed his point, saying that commuters who purchase tickets had the right to travel safely in a seat.

He added that the decision was taken to back social distancing laws imposed during the Covid-19 pandemic.
