State honours for late Thondaman ; Funeral on Sunday Featured

Remains of the leader of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress and late Minister - Arumugam Thondaman will be placed at the Parliamentary complex today (28) for state honours.

The Parliament Communications Department said the remains will be placed in the hall adjacent to the foyer between 10.45am and 11.30am to pay last respects.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, PM Mahinda Rajapaksa, Speaker of the 8th Parliament - Karu Jayasuriya as well as former ministers and MPs are scheduled to arrive in Parliament to pay their final respects.

The funeral rites will be held on Sunday (31) at Norwood Grounds in Hatton.

CWC wants to fill Thondaman's void with son

Meanwhile, he Ceylon Workers Congress requested Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to provide nominations to Jeevan Thondaman to contest the General Election from the Nuwara Eliya District to fill the position left vacant following the demise of Arumugan Thondaman.

Jeevan Thondaman, 26, is the son of the late Arumugan Thondaman.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s office, the CWC Politburo discussed the matter with Prime Minister Rajapaksa yesterday and the request was made by Deputy Leader of the CWC Senthil Thondaman.
