SC guidance sought over constitutional issue Featured

The Commission of Elections states that considering the prevailing situation, it will not be possible to hold the Gen. election even on the last week of May.

In a letter to presidential secretary - P.B. Jayasundara, the election commissioner - Mahinda Deshapriya stated that therefore, a new parliament cannot be convened within the three months' period since its dissolution on March 02.

Therefore, it is prudent for the president to promptly seek the guidance of the Supreme Court to resolve issues that have arisen, the letter says.

The president dissolved parliament on March 02, and according to the constitution, a new parliament should be convened within three months since its dissolution.

However, the prevailing health situation had left no option but to postpone the general election indefinitely.

Accordingly, this is created a constitutional issue, reports say.
