Sri Lanka celebrates 72nd Independence Day

Today (04) marks the 72nd year since Sri Lanka gained Independence from the British.

For a period of 443 years since 1505, Sri Lanka has been a colony of the Portuguese, the Dutch and the English respectively.

The official celebration of the Independence Day was held at the Independence Square in Colombo this morning, under the auspices of president Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime minister - Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The event, which stated at 8.00am, was attended by over 1500 invitees and around 1000 civilians, according to minister Mahinda Samarasinghe.
State Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe added the government decided to limit the duration of the celebrations owing to the prevailing economic climate.

Several items such as the parachute display usually held, has been removed from the agenda.

Meanwhile, Google has also changed its doodle on its search page to mark the event.
