Agreement to amend several election laws Featured

During a meeting held between Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva and the Elections Commission Chairman they had agreed to amend several election laws including the increment of deposits paid during an election and curtailing the amount spent on election campaigning expenditure.

The Election Commission stated that several officers from the Attorney General’s Department and the Department of the Legal Draftsman had also joined the discussion.

The Commissioner General of the Election Commission Saman Sri Ratnayake said that it had also been agreed to permit those engaged in essential services, such as the Health, Ports and Airport services to use the postal voting facility.

The importance of holding the Provincial Council elections was discussed at this meeting and it had been agreed upon to have the required laws approved in parliament to hold the Provincial Council election under the old system.

Hence, laws are to be formulated to present the amendments to parliament within a month.
