Crisis within Tamil parties intensifies Featured

The Tamil parties in the North and East have split up over the 13 demands put forward by the North and East university unions.

These 13 demands were presented to the two main presidential election candidates through their political parties.

The SLPP candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had rejected these demands. However, the TNA Leader R. Sampanthan had gone to India and M.A. Sumanthiran had gone to France and discussed these demands with the Tamil Diaspora there, it is reported.

Thereafter, the Tamil parties were allowed to take their own decisions on who they should support and the ITAK headed by Mawei Senadhirajah, PLOTE headed by Dharmalingham Sidharthan, TELO headed by Selvam Adaikalanathan had extended their support to the NDF candidate Sajith Premadasa.

However, the United Tamil People’s Front headed by C.V. Wigneswaran and the EPRLF headed by Suresh Premachandran and the All Ceylon Tamil Congress headed by Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam had protested against the decision of the above group and had decided to stand independently.

Meanwhile, convening a media briefing the Jaffna University Student Union requested that the demands presented by them should not be discarded, alleging that the Northern Tamil parties are hoodwinking them.
